Former Gophers men’s track star Keita Cline ran a great second leg for the British Virgin Islands’ Olympic 400-meter relay team Friday. Unfortunately, the team did not qualify for the second round.
Cline was joined by Ralston Varlack, Willys Todman and Mario Todman, who combined to run the race in 41.26 seconds. Their time was almost two seconds slower than the lowest qualifying time of the day, 39.47, which was notched by Ghana and Nigeria.
Varlack, who started the race for the British Virgin Islands ran the slowest portion on the team. He completed his 100 meters in 11.74. Cline, on the other hand, finished in 9.74 seconds.
Buetow to coach hockeyin Texas
Former Gophers hockey coach Brad Buetow was hired Saturday to coach the Waco Wizards of the Western Professional Hockey League.
Buetow was 171-75-8 at Minnesota from 1979-85, leading the Gophers to the NCAA final in 1981. He also coached United States International and spent five seasons at Colorado College.
Last season Buetow, 45, coached the Quad City Mallards of the Colonial Hockey League.
