>KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) – Robbers shot and wounded six people at Malaysia’s main international airport before fleeing with $1 million, police and news reports said.
The robbers fired at security guards accompanying two currency exchange workers who were carrying a bag of cash at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Wednesday, the Bernama news agency said.
District police chief Zahedi Ayub said two bystanders were also wounded in the robbery. The victims have all been hospitalized with gunshot wounds to the legs, the reports said.
The guards said they opened fire at the getaway car, and police found about 40 cartridges on the ground.
A district police official confirmed that six people were wounded in an armed robbery, but said he could not provide details. Airport authorities could not immediately be reached for comment.
The workers and guards had been walking to a currency exchange outlet on another floor, the reports said. The suspects, who looked Malaysian, appeared to have studied the route used by the exchange workers, Zahedi told Bernama.
The robbers carried pistols and fled in a car after the heist, which took place around 7:50 p.m. and was over in three minutes, The Star newspaper reported on its Web site.
Police have set up road checkpoints to find the robbers, Zahedi said.
Glass windows at the airport entrance were shattered in the shoot-out. Flights were not disrupted.
