DULUTH, Minn. (AP) âÄî Minnesota’s long-running Senate trial has pulled a number of elections officials into its orbit, but Duluth’s city clerk is trying to resist. Jeff Cox was subpoenaed by Democrat Al Franken, but Duluth is contesting the subpoena. The city says the $105 Cox was offered for time and travel doesn’t begin to cover the more than $1,000 in lost work time and expenses. Deputy City Attorney Alison Lutterman wrote in court papers that the city is running a lean operation and shouldn’t bear the expense of a proceeding that doesn’t concern it. Deputy Secretary of State Jim Gelbmann said Friday that he thinks all local governments should get greater compensation for the costs associated with the trial, and he hopes the judges will consider it. Several county and city officials have spent multiple days on the stand, with a government attorney often accompanying them to St. Paul when they’re called to testify. The trial starts its sixth week Monday.
