Northwoods League action continues through holiday weekend
With the Fourth of July this weekend, most athletes receive the week off of competition. But not the Northwoods League, including many Gophers’ baseball players.
If you are heading out of town to the Rochester of Duluth areas of Minnesota, there will be games all weekend for you to enjoy.
Rochester will be playing host to Mankato, which will showcase three Gophers on Rochester’s roster. Outfielder Matt Fiedler is batting .290 with 9 RBIs. Just behind him is second baseman Connor Schaefbauer has knocked in 8 runs, while batting .253 this season.
Alexandria will be travelling to Duluth this weekend, where they might get to see Gophers pitcher Toby Anderson. For Duluth this year, Anderson has started six games with a 2-2 record and a 3.09 ERA.
Former Gophers look for All-Star nod
Major League Baseball’s All-Star weekend is fast approaching and with it comes the anticipation of finding out which players will compete at the midsummer classic.
And with the starters being determined by fan voting, if any former Gophers want a shot at the roster they will have to be selected by the managers based on the latest voting results.
Twins closer and former Gophers pitcher Glen Perkins has the best chance to represent Minnesota in the game. Perkins has gotten the nod the last two seasons and has been putting together a near-perfect season for the Twins, recording 24 saves in 24 opportunities with a 1.44 ERA.
The game takes place July 14, but the rosters will be announced this Sunday as voting draws to a close.
NBA Summer League begins this weekend.
The NBA Summer League kicks off this Saturday – with or without two Former Gophers.
After Andre Hollins and Mo Walker were not drafted in last week’s NBA draft, the two will attempt to find their way on to a NBA Summer League roster.
The clock is ticking however, and if they do not find themselves on a roster, the two will have to explore alternative options like playing overseas.
