A University student was the victim of an armed robbery near the University Recreation Center early Sunday morning.
University Police Chief Greg Hestness said the incident happened at 2:50 a.m. Sunday.
A male student was walking back to his residence hall and waiting to cross University Avenue Southeast near 19th Avenue Southeast when a red four-door car drove up to him and stopped, Hestness said.
Two men got out of the car, displayed handguns and demanded the victim’s cell phone, according to a public safety alert sent out Sunday afternoon.
One of the suspects hit the victim in the back of the head with a gun, and the other demanded his cell phone. After the victim gave the two suspects his cell phone, they got back in the car and left. The victim didn’t get the license plate number of the car.
Hestness said since the incident happened on the weekend, an investigator will be assigned to the case tomorrow.
“Until we talk to the victim and others in the area, there’s not much else we can do,” he said.
