Gophers men’s basketball coach Tubby Smith said he hasn’t received any offers for coaching jobs and said he expects to be at Minnesota next season, according a report by the Pioneer Press on Tuesday.
A Saturday report by the Pioneer Press cited a person close to Smith saying that the Gophers’ coach had been contacted by Oregon last week. In a report Monday, the Pioneer Press cited a person familiar with the situation saying that Smith had been offered the head coaching job at the Oregon.
But two Oregon televisions stations cited sources close to the school over the weekend saying that Oregon had not contacted Smith and that he isn’t a candidate for the job.
"It was crazy," Smith was quoted as saying about the recent rumors of his departure from Minnesota to multiple schools. "I haven’t sent any signals out there that I’m ready to move."
Smith told the Pioneer Press that the rumors might have come out of reports of a contract extension and plans for a new practice facility.
"I never say never," Smith was quoted as saying in Tuesday’s report. "I’ve been through it before, and you never say no because if you do, it makes you look like a fool. I’m just saying today, the thing is that we’re happy here."
