Perhaps lost in the breath of fresh air at the Gophers’ new Siebert Field was the fact that Minnesota’s weather, even in April, can be treacherous.
The weather forced the Gophers to cancel their three-game series with Michigan State during the weekend. It’s the first time since 2007 the Gophers have had an entire Big Ten series canceled.
The roughly eight inches of snow in the Twin Cities on Thursday made the field unplayable during the weekend. The 40-degree weather also made being outside uncomfortable.
The weather has prompted the cancellation or postponement of five Gophers games this season and has delayed a few more.
Minnesota is scheduled to play again Wednesday against North Dakota State at Siebert Field.
Softball also canceled
The Gophers softball team also canceled its weekend series because of lingering winter weather.
Minnesota’s three-game series with Michigan State at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium will likely not be made up, according to Gophers athletics.
