MINNEAPOLIS (AP) âÄî Tom Petters’ defense attorneys are seeking court permission to quit. The lawyers accuse the government of meddling in the Wayzata businessman’s defense by objecting to payment of their fees from Petters’ frozen assets. In court filings Monday, they say they haven’t been paid in nearly three months. They say the tab tops $560,000 so far, and the final cost could top $5 million. Last week, prosecutors said they’re concerned that there will be few assets left for victim restitution if the defense team’s fees aren’t limited. Petters is accused of running a $3.5 billion Ponzi scheme. He says he’s innocent. His trial is set to start in June.
