No. 1 Minnesota defeated No. 20 North Dakota State 35-3 on Sunday at the NWCA National Duals in Columbus, Ohio. The Gophers advanced to the semifinals with the win and will wrestle again Monday afternoon.
Minnesota received a first-round bye before taking on NDSU. The Bison defeated No. 19 Chattanooga in the first round to earn the right the take on the Gophers.
Minnesota wrestlers David Thorn (133 pounds) and Dylan Ness (157) both pinned their opponents to take a commanding lead for the team.
The Gophers’ only loss came at 165 pounds, as senior Danny Zilverberg lost to No. 3 Steven Monk in an 8-5 decision.
With the match well in hand, two-time defending NCAA heavyweight champion Tony Nelson was given the night off. Minnesota freshman Michael Kroells wrestled in his place and scored a 14-5 major decision.
Minnesota will face No. 13 Ohio State in the semifinals Monday afternoon.
If the Gophers get past the Buckeyes, they’ll face the winner of the match between No. 4 Cornell and No. 11 Oklahoma. A loss will pit Minnesota against the loser of the Cornell-Oklahoma dual in the third-place match.
