Men’s swimming and diving in second after day one of Big Ten Championship meet

Minnesota’s men’s swimming and diving team is in second place after one day of competition at the Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Bloomington, Ind.

The eighth-ranked Gophers got an individual title from senior Adam Mitchell in the 200-yard individual medley. Mitchell clocked in at 1 minute, 44.65 seconds in winning the championship race. Junior Igor Cerensek finished second in 50 freestyle, timed at 19.93.

Minnesota turned in a pair of thirds in the relay events Thursday. In the 200 free relay, the team of Ales Volcansek, Neil Osten, Tyler Schmidt and Cerensek touched in at a time of 1:19.94. In the 400 medley relay, the team of David Plummer, Colin Lee-To, Dan Berve and Cerensek finished in 3:10.48.

Thursday night, five swimming events held finals and one diving event finished. Tonight, there will be eight finals contested, and the competition will end Saturday night with seven finals.

The Gophers won the Big Ten title in 2005.

Minnesota gets transfer

Sophomore Krista Chin will transfer to Minnesota’s volleyball team, coach Mike Hebert announced Thursday.

Chin, a 5-foot 7-inch libero/defensive specialist, is transferring from Arizona. This is the second-consecutive year the Gophers will get a transfer from Arizona.

Last season, Meghan Cumpston transferred from Arizona to Minnesota. Cumpston was second on the team in kills last year with 3.02 per game.

Women at Pavilion

Minnesota’s women’s gymnastics team will compete against No. 7 Iowa State on Saturday at the Sports Pavilion.

The 20th-ranked Gophers are coming off a 196.650-193.400 loss at No. 3 Utah last weekend.

The meet begins at 6 p.m.

Men go to West Coast

Minnesota’s men’s gymnastics team will participate in the Pacific Coast Classic this weekend in Oakland, Calif. The meet is at 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to the ninth-ranked Gophers, the meet will feature six other top-10 teams: No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 3 Stanford, No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Iowa, No. 8 California and No. 10 William and Mary fill out the seven-team field.
