Thursday
Michele! The Musical Bachumanntary
Minneapolis Theater Garage
7:30 p.m.
$28-$30
Minneapolis Theater Garage is making the musical political. Tonight they carry the satirical, song-laden odyssey through the life and legislative times of controversial Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann to the stage. Regrettably, Bachmann most likely wonâÄôt be attending the debut.
Friday
Lazerbeak
The Fine Line Music Cafe
8 p.m.
$10
WeâÄôve raged to the sick backing beats he drops with Doomtree, and weâÄôve rocked to his shred sessions at Plastic Constellations shows. Now the day has dawned where Lazerbeak (Aaron Mader) will wow Minneapolis all on his own. His solo debut, âÄúLegend Recognize Legend,âÄù features much of the same dizzying, multifarious production that established his Lazerbeak rep, but he rounds it out with deep, driving vocals, providing yet another reason to stay tuned in to his work.
Saturday
Dark Dark Dark and Roma Di Luna
First Avenue
$10
In a dual album release show, local bands Roma Di Luna and Dark Dark Dark will rock the main room stage to unveil their new material onto eager (and presumably intoxicated) Minneapolis fans. Joining them in the lineup will be charming folk sweethearts, Caroline Smith and the Goodnight Sleeps and DJ Anatomy.
CULTURE TO CONSUME
Listen to this: âÄúRecord CollectionâÄù by Mark Ronson and The Business Intl âÄî While the very public sexual exploits of Li-Lo have pushed DJ Sam Ronson into the Hollywood spotlight, something must be set straight: Her sexy big bro, Mark, is the only Ronson that matters. The whiz-kid producer has dropped his second LP, âÄúRecord Collection,âÄù which strays away from the funky Dap King-backed covers of his first album, âÄúVersion.âÄù The songs are original, and to my New Order lovinâÄô delight, heâÄôs embraced the influence of catchy âÄô80s synth-pop. âÄúRecord CollectionâÄù features some exciting cameos ranging from Ghostface Killah to Simon LeBon. He also introduces the adorable Rose Elinor Dougall, whose fresh take on Brit-Pop could easily leave Lily Allen cursing.
Drink this: Pabst Blue Ribbon âÄî Heineken? F*** that s***. ItâÄôs homecoming weekend after all, so I will begrudgingly let a lack of adventurousness slide, but just this once. Save your money, take Dennis HopperâÄôs golden words to heart and behave yourselves, Gophers.
Eat this: Pulled Pork at BaldyâÄôs BBQ âÄî Cedar-Riverside hungrily welcomes award-winning BBQ to the artsy âÄôhood. Prices are student-friendly, and the menu âÄî including ribs, brisket and many variations of pulled pork âÄî is nothing less than mouthwatering. Do not wear a white shirt.
Watch this: Twin Cities Film Fest âÄî As of Tuesday, we Minneapolis dwellers have the cool opportunity to access some of the best moving pictures in the world. Seriously, take advantage of this. With dozens of options to sort through, familiar names, and even some directors in attendance, thereâÄôs sure to be something that strikes your cinematic fancy. www.twincitiesfilmfest.org/
Read this: âÄúTalking to Girls About Duran DuranâÄù by Rob Sheffield âÄî In a nerdy yet endearing homage to rock âÄònâÄô roll, the Rolling Stone columnist humorously recounts his awkward coming-of-age in 1980s New England and all of the music that made it bearable.
