The Gophers will have to wait a little longer for their first conference regatta of the season.
Minnesota was scheduled to row in its first conference regatta against Iowa over the weekend but instead will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, for a scrimmage with the Hawkeyes.
“They weren’t able to get the permit to be on the lake so we’re going to run it on their river that is right on campus,” head coach Wendy Davis said.
Davis said she was disappointed about the cancellation but that there’s still a chance to battle Iowa, and the team wants to win this weekend.
The Gophers are fresh off six victories in their first regatta of the season at the Oak Ridge Invitational, and their first varsity four was named Co-Big Ten Boat of the Week.
Freshman Jackie Stein was the coxswain of the first varsity four that took home two wins in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
“That’s really good for the start to the season,” Stein said. “We’re still unsure who is going to be in the first varsity four … but I’m really excited for the upcoming season.”
This weekend every crew will compete, including the novice group, which did not race last weekend.
“We are ready to have that winning season,” senior Maddy Bourgeois said. “I definitely can see us succeeding because we have a strong, young team.”
Although there will not be an actual competition this weekend, Davis said it will serve as a chance for the team to grow.
“We seem to have a pretty good rapport on the team,” the coach said. “It’s been a nice atmosphere since the beginning, but nothing bonds a team like traveling and competing.”
