Ramsey county officials on Thursday postponed making a decision about whether to accept Gophers football player Billy Dee Cockerham into a first-offenders program following charges of felony credit card fraud and theft.
Cockerham, 19, was charged with one count of felony credit card fraud and theft stemming from an incident at Dayton’s Roseville store on May 24. Cockerham was suspended from the team pending an investigation into the case.
Former football team member Joseph Justice, 21, was also involved in the May 24 incident and has been dismissed from the team.
If Cockerham is accepted into the program, he will have a one-year probation period in which to perform 100 hours of community service.
After probation, Cockerham’s charges would be dismissed. However, an arrest will still appear on his police record.
Project Remand, a nonprofit program, was designed to keep first offenders from re-entering the criminal system.
Cockerham’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 21.
