Officials pulled a body out of the Mississippi River near the University of Minnesota campus Wednesday afternoon.

A sheriff onsite said the victim appeared to have been dead for some time. The victim was a man estimated to be between 50 and 65 years old, according to a Minneapolis police report. No further identity is known, and the Hennepin County medical examiner has yet to determine the cause of death.

A passersby saw the body and reported it at about 10 a.m., according to a Sheriff’s Office release. About 20 officials from Park Police, Minneapolis Police, the Fire Department, the Sheriff’s Office and the Hennepin County Medical ExaminerâÄôs office were at the scene. They took pictures, examined the body and prepared to transport it. A few Hennepin County Sheriff officers watched from atop the Third Avenue Bridge.

Dusty Delisle was eating lunch at Tuggs Tavern on Main Street Southeast when he heard about the commotion. Watching the scene at about 12:30, he said officials had been struggling to get a hold of the body, which was stuck in some brush.

At about 12:55 p.m., officers pulled the body out of the water and onto the shore of a small piece of land stretching out of the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory near the Hennepin Avenue Bridge.

Officials put the body in a blue bag and then onto a stretcher. After a few minutes of examining the body further, six officials, acting almost as pallbearers, put the body into the medical examinerâÄôs tan Chevrolet Suburban.

The body, face-down, appeared bloated and was in dark clothing.
