An individual vehicle fire broke out in the Oak Street Parking Ramp off of Southeast Oak Street and Deleware Street Southeast on Thursday afternoon, a fire official confirmed on the scene.
“I smelled something, I looked up, and there was smoke coming from the hood,” said valet Siri Kounhavong, who drove the BMW X3 up to the second floor before the front of the black SUV burst into flames around 1:25 p.m. “We called 911 right away and next thing you know it started smoking and it just caught on flames.”
Nobody was injured, and fire fighters were able to contain the fire that dismantled the front of the BMW and slightly damaged the two cars on either side of it. The valet assistant manager Sybastyen Hildman called it one of the most exciting moments of the year for the valet crew, which was still buzzing an hour after the fire.
“This is definitely the first,” Hildman said. “It’s not something that usually would happen upon just parking a car off the driveway or bringing it in the ramp.”
