The Big Ten conference named Minnesota thrower Quentin Mege its Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
The junior impressed during his performance at the Musco Twilight in Iowa City, Iowa this weekend. Mege won the hammer throw with a personal record toss of 65.54 meters. The distance ranks first in the Big Ten and eighth in the nation so far this season.
The Frenchman is now second on Minnesota's record list for the hammer throw. He is less than a meter off of current assistant coach Lynden Reder's record of 65.76 meters.
The honor is Mege's first in his career.
The Gophers compete again this weekend at meets across the country. Relays will take center stage at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa on April 25-28. Two distance runners will race April 29 at the Payton Jordan Invite at Stanford University in an attempt to qualify for the U.S. Olympic trials. Other men's team members will travel to St. Paul on April 26 to compete at the Macalester Twilight.
