Who: PatrickâÄôs Cabaret
What: Vogue/Trash Costume Fashion Ball
Where:3010 Minnehaha Ave
When:Oct. 16
Nine years ago âÄúZoolanderâÄù brought the catwalk to the big screen.
Between the walk-offs and break dance fighting, Mugatu created the vagabond-chic line âÄúDerelicte.âÄù If the cast were replaced with people who werenâÄôt dimwitted, the setting were changed to Minneapolis and the Prime Minister of Malaysia wasnâÄôt in danger, one might get an idea of what is happening at PatrickâÄôs Cabaret on Oct. 16. PatrickâÄôs will be hosting the first Vogue/Trash Costume Fashion Ball, and everyone will be an âÄúambi-turner.âÄù
Vogue/Trash is making a statement for the local art and fashion world. It is a chance for PatrickâÄôs to raise some money for the organization and give the performer a chance to show off their designs and have one helluva good time.
âÄúIâÄôve seen a lot of fashion show benefits and IâÄôm kind of making fun of that, because IâÄôm not featuring too much fashion,âÄù program director Arturo Miles said. âÄúI just want artists to use a runway space and do performance art or whatever they want to do.âÄù
Not all of the people participating are actual fashion designers. PatrickâÄôs allows anyone to come in and show off what they can do âÄî that goes for the fashion show as well. Artists of all different disciplines are involved, and some will be reprising designs from past shows.
Halloween was another inspiration for the theme, which is obvious with the robot dress that lights up, the set of hip-hop Wizard of Oz costumes and the priest with a pregnant nun.
âÄúThe Cabaret is a really safe place to be able to experiment because we donâÄôt audition,âÄù Miles said.
The show will feature designs that will be up for a silent auction, ranging from ready-to-wear to couture for both men and women.
âÄúSome of the stuff I donâÄôt know whatâÄôs going to happen. I left it open,âÄù Miles said.
For the performers, costuming is key for the productions they are involved in. Dancer and participant Erin Sheppard said, âÄúAs a choreographer, for me, itâÄôs nice to have limitations. If I know how a costume moves then I can choreograph to go with the natural movement of the costume.âÄù
The campy atmosphere will also include electro, ltali-disco, house beats and break dancers to add to the eclectic display of fashion âÄî because with fashion, anything goes.
âÄúFashion is in the eye of the beholder,âÄù Miles said.
Thus, even those slothful co-eds who show up to class wearing sweatpants are, for better or worse, making a fashion statement.
As Zoolander said, âÄúIâÄôm pretty sure thereâÄôs a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is.âÄù PatrickâÄôs has found the answer for themselves. By allowing people to find their own ground and develop their art projects, Vogue/Trash can happen without limits. And fashion has no limits.
