Minnesota sophomore Kierra Smith became the first individual event winner for the Gophers Friday night when she took home first place honors in the 100-yard breaststroke. Smith won the event with a 59.80 second finish.
Minnesota performed well in the prelims, putting a combined 15 athletes in the championship finals of their respective events.
Junior Jessica Plant took second in the 200-yard freestyle while teammate Becca Weiland took third in the 100-yard butterfly.
Indiana started off the meet well by taking first in the 400-yard medley relay with Penn State finishing in second. The Gophers rounded out the top three in third place.
Penn State had a very successful day at the pool with a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke and two first place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle.
Minnesota senior Maggie Keefer defended her three-meter crown and took first on the three-meter spring board with a score of 386.75 to cap off the meet.
When the scores were tallied, the Gophers found themselves in first with a score of 527 points. The Hoosiers placed second with 397 points while Penn State finished in third with 314.
