Minnesota’s football team had five players named first-team All-Big Ten on Tuesday, including three who were selected to the top squad by both coaches and media.
Running back Laurence Maroney, center Greg Eslinger and tackle Rian Melander were unanimous first-team selections. Guard Mark Setterstrom was a first-team pick by the media and made the coaches’ second team, while cornerback Ukee Dozier was a first-team media choice.
The media chose defensive end Darrell Reid to the second team.
The Gophers (6-5, 3-5 Big Ten) tied Michigan for the most first-team selections with five, and Minnesota also posted the second-highest first-team haul in school history.
Running back Marion Barber III and tight end Matt Spaeth received honorable mention citations by the coaches and media. Wide receiver Ernie Wheelwright was an honorable mention selection by the media.
Additionally, coaches gave Dozier and Reid honorable mention.
Men’s swim signs two
Minnesota’s men’s swimming and diving team announced the signing of Minnetonka’s Colin Lee-To and Cretin-Derham Hall’s Adam Weis to national letters of intent Tuesday.
Both will be eligible to compete for the Gophers in 2005-06.
Lee-To is the Class AA state record-holder in the 50-yard freestyle and has won state titles in the 50 and 100 freestyles the last two years.
Weis has won the last two Class AA state titles in the 100 butterfly and claimed the 2004 championship in the 200 freestyle.
“We would like to close the Minnesota borders to other colleges, and we were successful in signing the two athletes that we really wanted,” coach Dennis Dale said in a press release. “They will both have an immediate impact in our program.”
