In his Feb. 6 letter “Citizens should report expired visas,” Anthony Reel makes a good point about citizens’ responsibility to notify the authorities of visa expiration dates on driver’s licenses, because having an expired visa is an illegal activity.
Indeed that is true. I wonder what will happen if by the same logic, we start notifying the authorities of underage drinking, use of illegal substances, traffic violations, etc., when our friends and families are committing such illegal acts.
Do we then become a society of spies where everybody is involved in policing everybody else? Or do we convince ourselves that only immigrants with expired visas are the real threat to our society? Hassib Amini graduate student School of Physics and Astronomy
