Freshman Teddy Frid broke four personal records in seven events to cap off his indoor season in 2018.

The Gophers wrapped up their indoor season at the NCAA championships in College Station, Texas on Friday and Saturday, where the team had six participants earn All-American accolades.

“It’s a difficult meet to be a participant in,” head coach Steve Plasencia said. “There’s only 17 kids in the country that get the chance to be a part of it, so it’s an elite competition.”

The 4×400 relay team has three underclassmen in it — Matthew Baker, Ben Psicihulis, Jonathan Webb — all received their first All-American award as second team selections.  Jackson Wellenstein is a junior on the relay team and he earned his third All-American award. The relay team finished with a time of 3:08.20 earning them 12th.

Senior Ryan Lockard went back into the NCAA championships after making it his sophomore season but missing it his junior year.

He competed in the high jump and earned a mark of 7.5 feet, earning him a 12th-place finish and second-team, All-American honors.

“It was kind of a big bummer to miss it last year,” Lockard said. “I kind of used it as motivation to make it back this year.”

This is Frid’s first national championship with Minnesota. Before his time with the Gophers, he competed for the Division II team, the University of Sioux Falls.

He made personal records in the 60 meters with a time of 7.10 seconds, in the high jump with 6 feet, 6 inches and in the long jump with 22 feet, 6 inches and a shot put personal record of 12 meters.

“Last year, [I was] at the Division II national meet, thinking that was something special,” Frid said. “The atmosphere was just insane, it was very eye opening and humbling to know your among the top in the country, something I’ll never forget.”
