Friday Music âÄì Regina Spektor While Regina Spektor may be best known for her 2006 single âÄúFidelity,âÄù the whimsical songstress has a surprisingly varied and substantial catalog. SheâÄôs an anti-folk darling, singing ballads that are personal-yet-Catholic and her subtle quirk makes men crumble. Oh Regina, when will someone fill that whole in your heart? State Theater 824 Hennepin Ave. $30.50 6:30 p.m. Comedy âÄì Greg Giraldo You might not know the name Greg Giraldo, , but thereâÄôs a good chance youâÄôve seen him, if youâÄôve had Comedy Central on for longer than 20 seconds. The veteran comedian was a regular on âÄúTough Crowd with Colin QuinnâÄù and has appeared on more than a few episodes of CCâÄôs roasts in which he generally brings down the house. GiraldoâÄôs standup material is some of the best around. He rants and raves with a fervor on par with Lewis Black, choosing more irksome material as his subject matter with results that are at times shocking, but always hilarious. The difference is that while Black plays up the IâÄôm-an-angry-old-bastard shtick, Giraldo manages a certain charm throughout his routine, so even when heâÄôs candidly dick-ish heâÄôs still endearing. Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy (Mall of America) 60 Broadway E., Bloomington $25.95 8 p.m. Film – Lebowski Fest: Part One For some reason people just canâÄôt get enough of The Dude. âÄúThe Big LebowskiâÄù wasnâÄôt particularly well received when it was released and it is by no means the Coen bros. best feature, but over the years it has developed a loyal cult following which has all lead up to this: Lebowski Fest . The traveling spectacle kicks off with a performance by the Black Diamond Heavies before a screening of the film. The Dude abides. First Avenue 701 1st Ave. N. Price: $20/$22 7:30 p.m. Dance âÄì Wayne McGregor: Random Dance Dance addicts about campus are in luck. Northrop begins its dance series with âÄúTony ManeroâÄù , looks very bizarre in the best sense of the word. The Chilean film takes its name from the lead character (played by John Travolta) in âÄúSaturday Night Fever.âÄù But this film is less dance-centric and more murder-tastic as the lead character gets a little too obsessed and goes on a killing spree. The film adds a new meaning to âÄúStayinâÄô Alive.âÄù Walker Art Center 1750 Hennepin Ave. $8 7:30 p.m. Saturday Music âÄì Woods I bought Patton Oswalt .is probably best known by mainstream America as the voice of Remy in PixarâÄôs wonderful family film âÄúRatatouille,âÄù but heâÄôs also an amazing standup comic. OswaltâÄôs forte is taking an intelligent look at some of the dumb things people do. Some of it seems self-evident, but Oswalt hammers it home for maximum yuks. State Theater 824 Hennepin Ave. $29.50 8 p.m. Festival – Lebowski Fest: Part Two If you missed day one of Lebowski Fest , fear not. Day two takes place at Memory Lanes and features bowling (obviously), trivia, and a costume contest. So, go bowl, play some trivia, and have the occasional acid flashback. Just donâÄôt play the Eagles when youâÄôre pulling up. Memory Lanes 2520 26th Ave. S. $25/$30 8 p.m. Festival âÄì Minnesota Renaissance Festival With the excitement of the State Fair and the beginning of fall semester, chances are you missed the beginning of the Renaissance Festival . Fear not, young knights, because the Festival doth continue. If that wasnâÄôt enough, this weekend also marks the Irish Heritage Celebration. Ride your steed on down to the festival grounds where theyâÄôll have free Guinness tastings, Irish tunes and the Men-in-Kilts Competition. Just pray that itâÄôs not windy. Renaissance Festival Site 12364 Chestnut Blvd., Shakopee $19.95 9 p.m. – 7 p.m. Art âÄì Art Shanty Projects Benefit This idea behind the Art Shanty series is fairly simple, a little hilarious and über fun. A bunch of artists decided to build strange and creative ice-fishing shacks for the public to goof off. The ice has melted, but that doesnâÄôt mean you canâÄôt play in a winter wonderland; thereâÄôs karaoke, board games and a pretty solid buffet. So prepare for the cold with some faux-winter fun. 801 Art Gallery 801 Washington Ave. N. $20 5 p.m.-10 p.m. Sunday India Fest 2009 Indian food can ultimately be a gift or a curse, but itâÄôs always worth a try. In addition to the cuisine, India Fest will offer performances and arts and crafts, among other things. ItâÄôs the first year of India Fest; so donâÄôt be surprised if itâÄôs a little rough around the edges. Just eat up and then run as fast as you can to the bathroom. Phalen Park 1600 Phalen Dr., St. Paul 12 p.m. âÄì 5 p.m. Music âÄì Har Mar Superstar Har Mar Superstar is back in town to ooze sex all over the place. ThereâÄôs not much to say about him that hasnâÄôt already been said; he puts on a phenomenal live show and kicks out the jams with the best of them. But if you donâÄôt like seeing fat, sweaty men in their underwear, you should probably stay at home. Uptown Bar & Café 3018 Hennepin Ave. S $14 9 p.m. Music – Japandroids Taste of Greece will have traditional music, dance performances and cooking demonstrations. If youâÄôre looking for a nice recipe for tzatziki, look no further. St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church 3415 Irving Ave. S. 12 p.m. âÄì 10 p.m. Sports âÄì Vikings vs. Browns ThereâÄôs a ton going on in the cities this Sunday, but it might be better to just stay at home. This Sunday marks the beginning of the Favre era in Minnesota, a concept that would have seemed laughable just five years ago. Favre could become our next hero or he could fall flat on his grizzled face; either way itâÄôs an event that canâÄôt be missed. Anywhere that has a TV 12 p.m. Culture to Consume Eat this: Zakia Deli After months of longing, I finally made a visit to the Lebanese-American eatery âÄúMad MenâÄù has reignited my obsession with the old-fashioned. Arguably the first cocktail, the old-fashioned contains a sugar cube, three dashes Angostura bitters, club soda and two ounces of sweet papa bourbon. Top it of with a maraschino cherry and an orange wedge and enjoy. If itâÄôs good enough for Don Draper, itâÄôs good enough for you. Watch this: IâÄôll admit that I was a little skeptical when Yo La Tengo is one of those bands that have been so good for so long that it makes you wonder if they sold their souls to the Devil. Though theyâÄôve never really broken into the mainstream consciousness theyâÄôre one of the most consistent and enjoyable bands around. Their new album âÄúPopular SongsâÄù is just another wonderful addition to their increasingly remarkable catalog. Read this: ItâÄôs always nice to read the book (or comic in this case) before seeing the movie, so check out âÄúWhiteoutâÄù by Greg Rucka and Steve Lieber. The story follows U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko as she investigates a murder on the monstrosity that is Antarctica. ItâÄôs a great read; letâÄôs just hope the movie can deliver.
