The University of Minnesota Police Department and Minneapolis Police Department responded to multiple thefts, burglaries and assaults in a busy week for UMPD.
MPD officers responded to a reported robbery near Van Cleve Park just before 2 a.m. Sunday. The victim said the suspect stole his phone and punched him once in the face. He suffered a bloody nose but sustained no other injuries. The suspect was gone by the time police arrived on scene.
A domestic assault was reported in the University of Minnesota Medical Center on April 24 at 6:50 p.m. The assault occurred between two family members, and the victim did not suffer serious injuries. The suspect’s case is awaiting a decision to press charges by a prosecutor, according to UMPD Lieutenant Chuck Miner.
A University student told UMPD officers his wallet was stolen in the University’s Mechanical Engineering Building on Monday between 1:30 and 3:30 a.m. The victim’s wallet was retrieved from the Transportation and Public Safety Building later that day, after which he found the suspect stole money, a U card, a state-issued ID and credit cards.
Two auto thefts near campus were reported to MPD on Sunday. The first theft occurred sometime between Thursday and Sunday on the 100 block of Bedford Street Southeast in Prospect Park. The car was turned off, and the victim possessed the only set of keys. The second auto theft reportedly occurred on the 1000 block of 25 Avenue Southeast in Como around 12:37 a.m. Both victims had legally parked their cars.
UMPD responded to two burglaries near East Bank light rail station Monday. A document scanner was reportedly stolen from a desk at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, and an employee at the Mayo Building reported some of her belongings, including a backpack, were missing.
Miner said this was the first reported burglary in the Mayo Building offices.
“Typically with the warmer weather … in any community, crime tends to increase [and] more victims [are] out and about. Suspects tend to come out,” Miner said.
