Gov. Mark DaytonâÄôs proposed budget includes $171 million in cuts from the stateâÄôs higher education systems.

Under DaytonâÄôs plan, the higher education budget would be reduced to $2.75 billion during the 2012-13 fiscal years, a 6 percent decrease from what the University of Minnesota, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system and the Office of Higher Education were projected to receive.

Minnesota Higher Education Commissioner Sheila Wright said at a Tuesday morning press conference that the Dayton administration hopes to minimize tuition increases under the proposed budget.

The State Grant program for higher education is protected from cuts.

DaytonâÄôs budget relies heavily on top-tier income tax hikes to help fill a $6.2 billion budget deficit. Republicans, who control both branches of the Legislature, are expected to oppose the plan.
