University of Minnesota police recovered a body from the Mississippi River after authorities received a report of a man jumping off the Washington Avenue Bridge around 7 a.m. Wednesday, according to a press release from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.

The body was that of a Twin Cities metro area man in his 50s, the release said. His name hasn’t been released.

University police Deputy Chief Chuck Miner said the man’s death was likely a suicide.

The Washington Avenue Bridge connects the East and West banks of the University campus. Though the incident occurred on campus, Miner said it’s unlikely the man was a University student.

University police used a boat from the school’s rowing team to recover the body, according to an official from the sheriff’s office.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

Someone attempted suicide on the bridge as recently as Sept. 13, according to University police records. The last suicide on the bridge reported by University police was in May 2012.

“A fair amount of people jump off that bridge,” Miner said. “It probably happens more than people realize.”
