The Minneapolis City Council Ward 6 special election is tight, leaving the official count in the air.
The Minnesota Secretary of State’s office reports that so far, as of about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday: Jamal Osman, a resident advocate with CommonBond Communities, had 28.5% of first-choice votes and about 14% of second-choice votes. AJ Awed, a mediator and fellow with the American Arbitration Association, had 22% of first-choice votes and about 16% of second-choice votes.
The vacant seat is decided by ranked choice voting and won’t be tabulated until Friday after a slew of mail-in ballots are received, as reported by Sahan Journal.
Park Board Commissioner AK Hassan trailed behind with nearly 14% of first-choice votes and about 20% of second-choice votes.
The Ward 6 seat has been empty since earlier this year, when Abdi Warsame was approved by the City Council as the head of the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority.
The Minnesota Daily will publish updated information as it becomes available.
