Following sophomore Tre’ Williams’ decision Friday night to enter the transfer portal, sophomore Sam Freeman followed suit, deciding to move on from the Gophers men’s basketball team, Star Tribune reporter Marcus Fuller tweeted Friday.
Another #Gophers player entered the transfer portal today with sophomore center Sam Freeman I was told. The 6-10 Freeman played a backup role in 18 games this season. @StribSports @marchmadness

Freeman played for the Gophers for two seasons. He appeared in eight games his first season and 18 this season. In an up and down season that featured plenty of injuries to the Gopher big men, Freeman still didn’t see a large increase in playing time.
The implications of former coach Richard Pitino’s firing have shown, but it also clears the way for new head coach Ben Johnson to bring in players himself. It isn’t all that uncommon for players to leave, but the portal goes both ways, and Johnson has already contacted players looking for a change of scenery.
