A task force charged with reviewing the names of four University of Minnesota buildings has recommended to strip the buildings of their names.
In a thrice-delayed report, the Task Force on Building Names and Institutional History recommends removing Coffman Union, Nicholson Hall, Middlebrook Hall and Coffey Hall of their names.
University President Eric Kaler and Executive Vice President and Provost Karen Hanson received the report Friday. Kaler will use its contents to issue his own recommendations to the Board of Regents in March. The Board will ultimately vote on whether the buildings will be renamed.
The buildings are named after former University presidents and administrators whose ardent support of segregation was brought to light in the 2017 “A Campus Divided” exhibit, which the report recommends be permanently installed in the newly renamed student union.
This is a breaking news report. More information will be added as it becomes available.
