Police Chief Janeé Harteau announced the city police would take part in a new federal program at the Police Conduct Oversight Commission meeting Tuesday night.
Minneapolis is one of a select few cities chosen for the Department of Justice’s National Initiative for Building Community Trust and Justice, which will focus on training officers to admit and correct for their own prejudices.
During the meeting, Harteau presented the results of the recent Minneapolis Police Initial Data Assessment, which analysed activity from 2009 to 2014. The assessment took place to shine a light on the department’s demographic arrest trends.
The program aims to expand training to bring more fairness to police practices across the city, while also making the department an example for other cities nationwide.
Harteau said that although statistics show that crime rates hit African American neighborhoods the hardest in Minneapolis, many factors are responsible.
The police department plays a role, but it’s not the only role,” Harteau said.
