The WNBA’s New York Liberty suspended former Gophers center Janel McCarville for the entire 2011 season for missing the team’s training camp, the Associated Press reported Friday.
In a statement announcing the news, Liberty coach and general manager John Whisenant said that even without McCarville, his team “is ready to compete for a WNBA championship this season.”
McCarville, along with current Minnesota Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen, was a center on the first Gophers women’s basketball team to reach the Final Four in 2003-2004.
The Charlotte Sting selected her as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 WNBA draft. McCarville has averaged 8.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in her WNBA career.
While at Minnesota, McCarville twice earned All-America honors and racked up 1,835 career points, good enough for fifth all-time in team history.
