The cars of at least eight people were broken into in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood early Tuesday morning, according to police reports. All the cars, several of which belonged to students, were parked in a lot between two student apartment buildings near the intersection of University and 6th avenues southeast. The vehicles had their windows shattered or locks punched out, said Kirstin Weber, an environmental design senior whose roommateâÄôs vehicle was broken into. The thieves targeted cars with visible electronics and stereos or GPS device cradles and chargers that indicated electronics, said Kevin Sallblad, co-owner of one of the apartment buildings that shares the lot. The thieves broke into and rifled through at least one vehicle without taking anything. They also strewed unwanted contents from some of the vehicles across the lot, Weber said. Sallblad said the lot is well-lighted but doesnâÄôt have cameras, which would be prohibitively expensive to install and likely wouldnâÄôt help stop the break-ins. âÄúHopefully itâÄôs an isolated incident,âÄù Sallblad said. Raiding CaneâÄôs Minneapolis police are investigating a robbery at Raising CaneâÄôs after a man allegedly held an employee at gunpoint and emptied the restaurantâÄôs safe Sunday morning, police said. The suspect waited near a service entrance before the restaurant opened for the day and ambushed an employee, allegedly sticking a gun into the manâÄôs back and saying, âÄúDo what youâÄôre told and this will go easy,âÄù Minneapolis police Sgt. Jesse Garcia said. The suspect then led the employee into the building and forced him to open the safe. The suspect emptied the safeâÄôs contents and fled, Garcia said. Security cameras captured footage of the incident, and police are continuing their investigation, according to the report. Dinkytown scuffle A suspect broke out of a Minneapolis police squad car Sunday morning after police detained him in connection with a scuffle in Dinkytown, police said. Police found the man backing his car out of the McDonaldâÄôs parking lot with two men clinging to the open passenger door, according to the report. As he was dragged along the pavement, one of the victims, a 21-year-old Minneapolis man, received a deep cut on his leg, exposing his shin bone. He was taken by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center, according to the report. Minneapolis police Sgt. Jesse Garcia said the men being dragged were part of a group fighting over âÄústolen property.âÄù Garcia did not specify if the suspects were connected to earlier crimes. Police apprehended the suspect and put him in the back seat of the squad car, but he fled when a woman who had been part of the group opened the door for him as officers dealt with the others involved, Garcia said.
