As Jay noted in his preview of upcoming shows last week, Conor Oberst will make his triumphant return to Minneapolis tonight at FIRST AVE after trying out his solo act at the 400 Bar last spring. At the cost of being set up for a slew of mockeries placed upon myself, and inspite of sounding quintessentially Indie, I would go as far as to say that Conor Oberst is perhaps-perhaps-perhaps the most eloquent songwriter of our generation.
Those who agree with this statement get a gold star*
If you are now laughing or shrugging off my statement, I implore you to visit Oberst’s discography and lyrical authorship before prematurely ejaculating your rebuttle.
Oberst has the ability as a songwriter to span the entire scope of human emotion in one verse (think Dylan). One need look no further than "Cape Canaveral" and "Lenders In the Temple" from his new self-titled album for proof of this.
Oberst is an auteur. In a time where the vast majority of songwriters merely regurgitate tired and redundant paradigms of songwriting, (paint-by-number artistic expression) Oberst maintains his integrity. He balances the old with the new, politique with emotion, tradition with innovation. This new project, his return to quasi-solo-status is just another notch on a belt he has been buckling since the age of 13.
Catch Oberst before he moves on, someone this talented inevitably bores easily.
