Dr. Date: I just found out my new boyfriend is my ex’s dad

I really like him, but what do I do?

Dear Dr. Date,

I dated this guy a couple years ago who was great during the relationship, but we didn’t have much in common. We went out for around six months before he cheated on me while drunk at a party, which sucked but was a good excuse to end things. Thankfully, we never got serious enough to meet the parents or have the same friends.

Anyway, there’s a problem. Last month, I was at a bar downtown when a hot older dude bought me a drink. I was smitten. I’ve never been much into older dudes (he had to have at least 20 years on me), but when a guy has a steady job, a great house and a nice car, I’m not going to argue with it. He told me he was divorced with a kid, which didn’t matter to me much, and we’ve been going out for a couple weeks now. He’s been sleeping over at my place until last night, when I stayed over at his.

I rolled over this morning only to see a photo of, you guessed it, my EX on his nightstand. I’ve been sleeping with his dad! I don’t know what to do, I really like this guy. I’ve told him in the past about being cheated on before, and he even got angry on my behalf. I’m scared he’ll ask me to meet his kid now and I won’t be able to say no. What do I do?

Sincerely,

Stuntin’ with his daddy

Dear Stuntin’ with his daddy,

Awkward. Don’t ever get into a who-was-better discussion.

Well, you have to figure out how to explain you dated his son without making it seem like you did this as an act of revenge (not gonna lie, that would have been the perfect move). If you want to keep dating this guy, you have to tell him as soon as possible. While I’m sure you don’t want to talk to his son, aka the ex, it might be good to give him a heads up — otherwise that family reunion is going to get real weird.

Sincerely,

Dr. Date
