The Transit of Venus will not happen again until the year 2117, according to a College of Science and Engineering information page.
It occurs when Venus passes between the Earth and the sun, producing a dark spot that is visible on the sun.
The University of Minnesota announced in a press release it will host public viewings at the Tate Laboratory of Physics from 4-9 p.m. and the Bell Museum from 5-10 p.m.
Astronomy professor Dr. Terry Jones will give presentations about the Transit at Tate, and planetarium educator Sarah Komperud will give presentations at the Bell Museum.
In case clouds spoil the viewing in Minnesota, both locations will livestream the event from a telescope in Hawaii.
