As people turn back their clocks Sunday night for daylight-saving time, the city urges people to check the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
Daylight-saving time ends Sunday, Nov. 4 at two a.m.
Beginning last Friday, all Minneapolis fire stations are giving away free 9-volt batteries for residents' smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
Over one-third of all deaths in fires are from the absense of smoke alarms, while one-quarter are from fires where the smoke alarms aren't working properly, according to the National Fire Protection Assocation.
