The University of Minnesota has named Brandon Eggum the acting head coach of the Gophers wrestling team as the school continues its investigation of J Robinson.
Eggum, the team’s head assistant coach, will take over all head coaching duties until the internal investigation of Robinson has concluded. Eggum has been on the coaching staff for 15 years and wrestled during his collegiate career at Minnesota, where he was a three-time All-American.
“It is important to have clear and continued leadership as the program prepares for the 2016-17 academic year,” said University Athletics Director Mark Coyle in a statement. “Coach Eggum is an effective leader and will ensure continued stability within the wrestling program.”
J Robinson — the team’s head coach for 30 years — was put on paid administrative leave June 1 after allegations surfaced that members of his team used and sold the prescription drug Xanax, and that Robinson sought to address the issue internally.
Authorities said in late June that Robinson and team members wouldn’t face any criminal charges in connection with the alleged use and selling of the controlled substance.
