University neighborhood residents vote down sound walls

State officials proposed the walls as part of a larger project to renovate Interstate 35W, which is still scheduled to begin next year.
Overnight testing of Central Corridor light rail cars began this week on the western half of University Avenue. When finished, the project will link downtown St. Paul and downtown Minneapolis. The line is planned to open in mid-2014, before the Major League Baseball All-Star game at Target Field next July.

The building that caught fire early Thursday morning on University Avenue Southeast housed an auto body shop. Now, rows of burnt cars line what would have been the back wall of the shop.
