With the addition of 50 new players from the transfer portal and the freshman class, the Minnesota Gophers football team is looking to create competition, developing a strong connection and chemistry between teammates in the process.
The team welcomed 19 transfer players from various colleges, as well as 31 freshman recruits for the upcoming season. These new players are fighting for returning players’ positions. Starting is not guaranteed. This competition has turned team leaders and veterans into mentors, initiating new players into the culture of Gopher football.
At the team’s media day on Wednesday, Coach P.J. Fleck said the team they have built is a sponge that continues to soak in information and adapt. Fleck saw a better transition this season than in the past.
“The transition has been way smoother than in the past because they are true fits,” Fleck said.
Notable players added this offseason include freshman defensive lineman Howie Johnson, who was ranked No. 1 in Minnesota by 247Sports, and senior defensive end TJ Bush Jr., who transferred from California to Minnesota.
The Gophers also lost key players this offseason to the transfer portal and graduation. Missing players from last season include star safety Koi Perich, who transferred to the University of Oregon, Le’Meke Brockington, who signed with the Atlanta Falcons, and Deven Eastern, who was drafted in the seventh round by the Seattle Seahawks.
Fleck said he has high expectations for this incoming freshman class to see playing time as the season progresses.
“This is a freshman class where I see a lot of freshmen [going] to be on the field,” Fleck said.
With the additions of these new players come the challenges of adapting to Gophers football, including growing team culture and building chemistry with returning players.
Veterans and returning players have taken on a leadership role by helping newcomers adjust to the program. They help new players understand the way they should carry themselves going into next season.
Redshirt defensive end Anthony Smith is entering his fifth year as a Gopher after his first-team All-Big Ten selection last season. Smith said he understands a cookie-cutter approach simply is not effective enough, so he builds those connections differently with each teammate.
“Everybody’s not motivated in the same way,” Smith said. “Some guys might have trauma built behind being yelled at, and some other guys can be yelled at, because that’s how they were coached in high school and that’s how they get their motors.”
Redshirt linebacker Maverick Baranowski also enters his fifth year with the Gophers as team captain. He said that one of the first things he does with incoming players is connect with them.
“You got to sit with them at dinner over in the cafeteria,” Baranowski said. “You got to hang out with them on the couch with the guys. Working hard – that’s what separates yourself, and that’s what brings you even closer as a team.”
Baranowski said summer is the best time to connect and build that chemistry as a team, with no hassle of classes or school. With all that extra time, he said, there are ample opportunities to build relationships with teammates.
“It’s the best opportunity to connect with your teammates,” Baranowski said. “You get a little bit more off-time. It’s nice out. You can go to the lake with the guys, and that’s what I look forward to in summer the most.”
Fleck continues to try and keep his players connected and ready during the offseason. Not just with returning players, but also by getting the new players situated with the coaches and staff.
“We do everything we can to connect our players with each other and with our staff once a month,” Fleck said. “We invite them over to our homes. We are doing team activities. It’s all about the connection of our team.”
The Gophers will continue to build chemistry and work on creating their team culture as they head into fall training camp, starting on Aug. 3. This will prepare the team for their home opener against Eastern Illinois University on Sept. 3, which will be the first of three consecutive home games for the Gophers.
