When she asked other volunteers what they needed, Nelson said that their biggest concern was letting people know that the food was there. “It all has to be gone by 8 p.m. [to comply with curfew],” Nelson said.

Kaczorek came to help a friend board up on Thursday afternoon and has been here helping ever since, including moving the aid operation on Thursday at about 9 p.m. when the neighboring library caught fire. Cherith Nelson holds up a sign that reads “Free Food” in front of Minnehaha Commons where a donation drop-off for the mental health residence grew into an impromptu community food shelf over the course of a few hours on E Lake Street near the MPD 3rd Precinct in Minneapolis on Friday, May 29. Nelson came to donate food, but stayed to help and happened to have sign materials in her car. When she asked other volunteers what they needed, Nelson says that their biggest concern was letting people know that the food was there. “It all has to be gone by 8 p.m. [to comply with curfew],” Nelson said.
