Cherith Nelson holds up a sign that says “Free Food” in front of Minnehaha Commons where a donation drop-off for the mental health residence grew into an impromptu community food shelf over the course of a few hours on East Lake Street near the Minneapolis 3rd Police Precinct on Friday, May 29. Nelson came to donate food but stayed to help and happened to have sign materials in her car. When she asked other volunteers what they needed, Nelson said that their biggest concern was letting people know that the food was there. “It all has to be gone by 8 p.m. [to comply with curfew],” Nelson said.

John Kaczorek, a math teacher from Minneapolis, gives a thumbs up outside of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church near the Minneapolis 3rd Police Precinct on Friday, May 29. Kaczorek came to help a friend board up on Thursday afternoon and has been here helping ever since, including moving the aid operation on Thursday at about 9 p.m. when the neighboring library caught fire. Kaczorek said that protesters and law enforcement alike have received aid at the church. “I’m not letting [the police] off the hook,” Kaczorek said, “but they need to know that their humanity is linked to George Floyd’s.”
