Moments before weighing in, redshirt freshman Skyler Petry displays his trimmed fingernails to an official. In addition to having a clean-shaven face, the regulation is just one of various standards wrestlers must meet to gain admittance for competition.

Sophomore Jake Short shows his cauliflower ear, a unique scar that is common among wrestlers. The scar forms upon traumatic impact to the ear, damaging cartilage, which then fills with fluid that can be drained. Short, who said he has been wrestling since he could walk, describes the cauliflower ear as a badge of honor and a symbol for the sacrifices that wrestlers make.

An integral aspect of the sport, weight management is second nature to most wrestlers, who know that an extra ounce on the scale means disqualification from competing within their weight class.

These dualities make wrestling a challenge to train for, as the athletes strive to excel on both sides of the spectrum.

Cynthia Weitzel sits in her artist studio at the Anderson Center in Red Wing, Minn., where she has had a permanent residency since 2011. In 2014, Weitzel founded and helped coordinate a monthlong residency program for deaf artists, the first of its kind in the country. A deaf artist herself, Weitzel describes the residency as a beautiful and unique opportunity. This past June, she was able to successfully host the second Deaf Artists Residency Program at the Anderson Center.
