Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen, R-Glencoe, one of the most vocal opponents of same-sex marriage in the Minnesota Legislature, is facing criticism after introducing his friend, Kevin Petersen, as someone who has "exited the gay lifestyle."
Monday, the Representative made controversial comments by using "a point of personal privilege" on the House floor.
"The interesting thing about Kevin is he was active in the gay lifestyle for about ten years and then he left it, got married and now has three children," he said.
Lawmakers had mixed reactions to Gruenhagen's statements – some clapped while others groaned in disapproval.
DFL House Speaker Paul Thissen said the comments were "inappropriate" and he preceded by prohibiting House members to be able to introduce visitors in the future.
