Rep. Ilhan Omar is projected to win Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press.
The race was clear cut with Omar having about 76.4% of the vote compared to her Republican challenger Dalia Al-Aqidi, who had 23.6% at 10:34 p.m. with around 87% of votes counted so far.
The race was not expected to be close with election forecaster FiveThirtyEight running 1,000 simulations where Omar won all 1,000.
Omar was challenged by Al-Aqidi who ran unopposed in her party’s primary election. Al-Aqidi briefly ran for the 5th District seat back in 2020 before withdrawing, but this cycle saw a bit more traction for her campaign.
In the Democratic Party’s primary, Omar faced former Minneapolis City Council Member Don Samuels for the second cycle in a row. Although the 2022 primary saw a very close margin between the two candidates, the 2024 primary saw Omar gain a much larger amount of support.
Al-Aqidid ran on a platform focused mainly on reducing the cost of living and increasing public safety for the constituents of the 5th district.
Omar’s platform this election cycle focused mainly on issues such as immigration, the economy and opposition to the war in Gaza.
Omar, who has held the seat since 2019, will hold on to the seat and represent Minneapolis as well as suburbs such as Saint Louis Park, Richfield, and Brooklyn Center until 2026.
