In a systemwide email on Monday, Executive Vice President and Provost Gretchen Ritter announced Galin Jones as the inaugural Vice Provost for AI, alongside the launch of the Artificial Intelligence Hub at the University of Minnesota. Jones is currently the director of the University statistics department.
With the new Vice Provost, the University intends to boost knowledge and skills associated with the usage of AI and reshape the way students across the state see technology in higher education.
“Under Dr. Jones’ leadership, we will expand AI literacy and governance efforts for students, faculty and staff while strengthening partnerships with policymakers, economic development leaders, and industry across Minnesota,” the statement said. “The vice provost will also drive statewide AI efforts that benefit learners at every stage–from Pre-K-12 and higher education to professionals in healthcare.”
This announcement coincides with the University’s efforts to strengthen their Elevate Extraordinary 2030 strategic roadmap.
In the planned roadmap, the University aims to improve on five goals, such as improving student career development and civil skills.
Created last August, the presidential AI Task Force Report recommended four adjustments regarding AI education at the University, including clarifying courses syllabus for potential AI usage and improving communication for the University community in relation to AI in academia.
“University students and faculty have expressed the need for clarity and guidance as a
significant priority in the considerations of AI use,” the task force report read. “Existing University policies provide the groundwork, but additional communication is required to support the ethical and appropriate use of these new tools.”
In the announcement, Ritter added the University is planning to share more information regarding the AI hub in the near future.

When I went to the U as a student in the 2010s, professors left and right were rightly pissed off by all these baby deans popping up. Rebecca Cunning-Ham has made an incredible feat: turning something that was already bad into a genuine pig-sty!

Completely ridiculous and indefensible. The University is slashing departmental budgets, cutting graduate admissions, and eroding teaching faculty but Rebecca CunningSHAM and the rest of these spineless administrators will never do what actually SHOULD be done: redirect funds AWAY from middle-management and over bloated administrators like this, lower the President’s salary, and put it back in the hands of departments!

What about AI and ethics? AI and government regulation? Does anyone care about how AI is using faculty research and writing without paying copyright fees? Why is making money with industry always the bottom line for UMN?
