If George Floyd Square were to be re-opened, it should be done with input and open dialogue from the city, the local community and activists who have made an effort to call for reform in peaceful ways.

A couple of weeks ago, I completed the Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) survey for the fourth time during my undergraduate career at the University of Minnesota. And for the fourth time, I reported that I do not feel comfortable with my identity on campus.

After an entire year of virtual learning, it would be so meaningful to be able to have a commencement ceremony that is not virtual, and continued efficient vaccine distribution leaves me hopeful that a commencement ceremony is possible for my classmates and me this year.

Passing the IHRA Definition of antisemitism is the first step in a long road to eradicate anti-Jewish hatred and will signal to Jewish students — and other minority groups — that the University of Minnesota will not stand idly by in the face of rising hate and discrimination.

For an educational institution that prides itself on free intellectual exchange, the referendum’s proposed adoption of the IHRA definition is extremely problematic and effectively shuts down free speech and academic freedom.
