Williams Arena is now “The Barn by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota”, the University announced Friday, a change that was revealed alongside a 10-year agreement between the University of Minnesota and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota.
This announcement followed the University’s decision in April 2025 to explore naming-rights opportunities for the arena. This partnership is meant to extend far beyond the arena, as the University and the health insurance provider also plan to expand wellness initiatives and community engagement across the state.
For generations of University of Minnesota students and alumni, Williams Arena has been a recognizable landmark of Gopher athletics. Now, the venue is entering a new chapter.
According to Senior Associate Athletic Director Paul Rovnak, the partnership reflects two organizations with a deep history of serving the local community.
“Both institutions play complementary roles in this state,” Rovnak said. “The University, through its leadership in education, research and public service, and Blue Cross, through their mission-driven commitment to improving health across every community.”
University leaders have emphasized that the arena’s core identity will remain the same, with the new name paying homage to the beloved nickname “The Barn.” It will continue to serve as a gathering place for the campus community.
The venue has had a long history on campus, first opening in 1928 as The Minnesota Field House before being renamed Williams Arena in 1950. Since then, it has served as the home of Gophers basketball.
University officials said the new partnership will support community initiatives outside gameday, including healthcare workforce development, research opportunities, youth sports clinics led by student athletes and mental health awareness campaigns.
Rovnak said many details are still being finalized, but students can expect new health and wellness programs to become available on campus in the coming years.
For some, the end of the Williams Arena name might feel like the end of an era. University leaders, however, view the agreement as an investment in the future rather than a departure from the past. While the name on the building might be different, inside, it will still be The Barn.

Welcome to the future of higher education, where every university building comes with a corporate sponsor and every naming-rights deal is celebrated as a victory. The millions these partnerships generate, of course, won’t be wasted on trivial things like lowering tuition or making college more affordable. Instead, they will be used to help inflate the salaries of the president, vice presidents, and coaches, while the cost of a degree continues to climb and higher education remains increasingly out of reach for anyone without privilege or wealth.
