Dear Dr. Date,
Hi, I’m in Carlson School of Management (add me on LinkedIn) and I have quite the career dilemma ahead of me. In October I started dating an average guy with above average connections. Things started out great, and as an added bonus his dad is higher up in a local company.
When I mentioned I was searching for an internship, he encouraged me to apply at his dad’s company, and said he would pull some strings to make sure I get the job. It’s now been a few days since the interview, and the company will be getting back to me in a couple weeks.
One issue: the emotional outlook of our relationship has become pretty bearish from my perspective. I’m heavily thinking of breaking up with my boyfriend in the near future, but I also know this internship could be a great opportunity for me and my blossoming career.
So Dr. Date, do I snake my way into a great opportunity or end things before I potentially take advantage of our relationship?
Sincerely,
Nervous Networker
Dear Nervous Networker,
I think you just inspired everyone at the U to swipe right on Carlson dudes. Gotta get that Target internship somehow…
The fact that your boyfriend is pulling strings to make sure you get the job is obviously wrong, but I’m sure you know that. Coworkers won’t love the person who dated the boss’s son to get the job, and you want your work to speak for itself. So let it! Just because he was the one who encouraged you to go out for it (by making an unethical promise, but whatever) doesn’t mean you couldn’t get the position on your own. You’re in Carlson. I’m sure your resume is incredible.
Instead of worrying about keeping up appearances with him for a job, picture your boyfriend saying “No, make sure you don’t hire her, she dumped me.” He’ll look immature, and I doubt the interviewers will take him seriously, even if his dad is high up in the company. No matter what happens, don’t lead him on — using someone for a job is not #UMNproud.
Sincerely,
Dr. Date
