Incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey won the Minneapolis Mayoral election with main challengers Sen. Omar Fateh (DFL-Minneapolis), DeWayne Davis and Jazz Hampton falling behind on Wednesday morning.
Frey won 73,723 votes after a second round of ranked choice voting, compared to runner-up Fateh’s 65,377 votes.
Mayor since 2017 and reelected in 2021, Frey has now entered his third four-year term as Minneapolis mayor. His campaign focused on expanding current housing initiatives and continuing efforts to reform the Minneapolis Police Department.
Frey was up against a total of 14 candidates, with Fateh rising as his main challenger. As well as Hampton and Davis gaining notoriety through their campaign efforts and alliance with Omar in their “anyone but Frey” strategy, which urged voters to rank them in first, second or third place.
In his second term as mayor, Frey contended with the riots following the murder of George Floyd in 2020 and the two consent decrees from the state and federal governments with the Minneapolis Police Department.
He has issued eight executive orders during his tenure as mayor, such as guaranteeing protection for reproductive rights and healthcare following the overturn of Roe v Wade in 2022.
Known as a moderate Democrat, Frey has vetoed resolutions from the left-leaning city council in the past such as a resolution about the Israel-Palestine conflict and minimum wage guarantees for Uber and Lyft drivers, which was overturned.
Prior to his first term as mayor, Frey served the city council from 2014-2018 and promised to improve residential development and increase small businesses in Ward 3.
