Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced his selections for the University of Minnesota’s Board of Regents Tuesday afternoon, after a deadlocked legislative process left four seats vacant as of July 1.
Joel Bergstrom, Samuel Heins, Ellen Luger and Kowsar Mohamed will serve as interim regents on the board until the Minnesota House and Senate are able to hold a joint session and appoint their official selections.
Bergstrom and Heins will serve as members at large, not representing a specific district or role.
Mohamed will hold the role of student at large, a position that aims to represent student voices within the regents’ legislative processes. Luger will represent the 5th Congressional District, representing Hennepin County, as well as parts of Anoka and Ramsey County.
“They will bring a wide range of experiences and perspectives, united by a deep commitment to the University’s mission,” Walz said in a press release. “Their leadership will be critical as the Board addresses current challenges and shapes the University’s future.”

The regent selection process was not normal. The MN Legislature failed to act, so the Governor got to appoint several of his financial donors. This will help keep the board firmly liberal. What’s new?
