Minnesota’s postseason run came to an end Wednesday night after a second-half surge by the Baylor Bears defeated the Gophers in a 67-48 loss at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Despite a competitive first half, the Gophers were unable to recover from a 17-1 run from Baylor early in the second half that turned the game into a blowout. The Gophers led 18-16 midway through the first half and trailed just 31-26 at halftime before the Bears gained control.
Cade Tyson led Minnesota with 19 points and seven rebounds, capping off a standout season in which he scored 628 total points, third-most in program history. Langston Reynolds added 13 points, while Bobby Durkin also contributed with six points and seven rebounds.
Minnesota showed early momentum, using an 11-4 run to take the lead in the first half behind scoring from Tyson and Isaac Asuma. But Baylor responded with an 8-0 run and held the Gophers scoreless late in the half to regain control.
The game shifted in Baylor’s favor after halftime with the Bears opening the second period on a 17-1 run, holding Minnesota to just one point over the first six minutes. The Bears extended their lead to 48-27 before Durkin ended the drought with a three-pointer.
Minnesota attempted to rally with a 12-4 run, cutting the deficit to 54-42 with just over eight minutes remaining, but Baylor quickly pushed the lead back to nearly 20 points to seal the win.
The Gophers struggled to make three-pointers, shooting just 3-of-23 from long-range. Baylor capitalized offensively, shooting 47% from the field and 58% in the second half.
Three Baylor players scored at least 15 points, led by Tounde Yessoufou with 19. Obi Agbim added 17 points, including five threes, and Cameron Carr finished with 15.
The loss marks Minnesota’s first game since March 11 and ends its run in the College Basketball Crown.
Baylor advances to face Oklahoma in the semifinals Saturday.
