At around 8:45 p.m. Thursday, an altercation between two individuals near the Church Street parking garage escalated to gunfire, resulting in a student being grazed in the leg, according to witnesses.
According to a University Safe-U alert, there are no reported victims. The Safe-U alert reads:
On Thursday, September 18, 2025, at approximately 8:44 p.m., A UMPD supervisor reported hearing gunshots near Rapson Hall. At the time, a student group event with an estimated 300 attendees was taking place inside the building. Officers arrived on scene and started to search the area. There are no reported victims. Out of an abundance of caution, please stay away from the area while UMPD and law enforcement partners continue their investigation. The Department of Public Safety will provide updates at http://z.umn.edu/alert.
Event attendee Mohammed Yusef said a University student was grazed in the leg and the said student left the scene.
Event attendee Abdirahman Farah said the victim was his friend, and he saw him in the aftermath with a grazed knee. Somali Student Association president Dahir Munye said the event was moved inside Rapson due to the rain.
The shooting interrupted the SSA Kickoff event, initially intended to take place at Superblock.
Witnesses said the SSA board announced the end of their event being held at Rapson Hall as soon as they received word that shots were fired. Police told students in Rapson initially to shelter in place, and eventually to move outside in groups.
According to Munye, he heard members of the SSA saying there were gunshots outside.
“I heard people saying, ‘Oh there were gunshots outside,’” Munye said. “Next thing I know, police are coming in, escorting people out the building.”
One woman fainted, but Munye said it was unrelated to the shooting, and she is okay.

Crime is down but tension is up. Guns make killing too easy.

This is what America has become: guns are how arguments and disagreements get settled. The gun lobby and their conservative puppets built this world. And it’s upheld by people who worship their guns more than they value human life. One wrong word, one wrong look and someone might pull a trigger. And that constant fear we now all have to live with? That’s on the gun lobby, conservative politicians, and the cult of gun worshippers.

Regarding “ Shots fired near Church Street parking garage,” what was that you were reported, a week before classes started? Oh yeah, crime was down since last year.
